The 1-Minute Ship Builder
Build the ship. Start the adventure.
Sooner or later, someone spots sails on the horizon.
The crew squints into the wind.
“Ship!”
Now the table turns to you.
Who are they?
Are they faster?
Are they trouble?
You could start flipping through naval rules…
Or — you can build the ship in about a minute.
Ships in Swashbuckler! aren’t floating stat blocks.
They’re moving stages for adventure.
All you need are three things:
Role. Traits. Crew.
When the ships you build finally meet on the open sea, The Ship Is the Stage shows you how to run cinematic ship-to-ship battles where the heroes—not the hull points—drive the action.
1. Role (Pick One)
The ship’s role tells you what it wants to do when trouble starts.
Pursuer
Built for speed. Hunts prey across open water.
Blockade
Heavy and stubborn. Controls harbors, straits, and choke points.
Raider
Agile and tricky. Strikes fast and disappears into fog or darkness.
Flagship
Large, powerful, and imposing. Its presence alone shifts morale.
Pick the role first. Everything else grows from that.
2. Traits (Pick 1–3)
Traits are what matter in a chase or fight.
Fast under sail
Heavy cannons
Reinforced hull
Ramming prow
Shallow draft (shoals, rivers, hidden coves)
Hidden compartments
Crew is fanatical—or mutinous
Notorious reputation (feared, cursed, admired)
Experimental Design — strange innovations: odd sails, steam engines, mechanical oars… maybe even clockwork crew.
Fast. Dangerous. Unreliable.
Traits tilt the odds when cannon smoke fills the air.
3. Crew
Ships aren’t interesting because of wood and iron.
They’re interesting because of who’s aboard.
Extras
Deckhands, sailors, expendable marines.
They haul ropes, load cannons, and crowd the deck when blades come out.
Toughs
A brutal boatswain.
A sharpshooter in the rigging.
A quartermaster with a grudge.
These are the people who make trouble personal.
Leads
The captain.
The duelist first mate.
Or a mysterious passenger who never comes on deck during daylight.
Ship Example
The Black Marlin
Role: Raider
Traits
Fast under sail
Hidden compartments
Feared reputation
Crew
Fearless captain who will risk the ship for glory (Lead)
A drunk but deadly first mate (Tough)
Twelve eager Extras who believe the captain is blessed by the sea
